Intro to Pattern Making / Make a Boxy Tee

If you dream of making and designing your own clothes, this is a great place to start.

In this 2 part workshop (6-7 hours total), you will learn to make your own boxy tee, start to finish. This hands-on beginner class will introduce you to the fundamentals of pattern making.

Part 1 includes taking your own measurements, drafting a pattern and testing the fit in muslin. Next, you’ll customize your pattern with some personalized design elements. Part 2 includes cutting and sewing your own garment.

Students will purchase their own fabric for their Tee. All other materials included. Fabric to purchase: 1 yard of light (preferred) to medium weight woven fabric plus 1 yard of contrast color woven fabric (i.e. 1 yard red + 1 yard blue), or 2 yards of one single fabric if preferred. Prewashing your fabric is advised. This fabric is only needed for the second class so there is room to discuss with your instructor on day 1.

* student must have taken at least one Intro to Sewing Workshop or have basic sewing experience.

Happy & Emboldened

Woooow I had so much fun! I have dabbled in sewing and have always wanted to learn how to make a pattern and this was a fantastic introduction, worth every penny. I haven't sewn in a long time because I'm a busy mom with three kids, but taking the class helped me prioritize it and the joy of making a shirt for myself is still with me one week later (and every time I put on my shirt). And again, this class was invaluable to start to understand how to make my own patterns. The tips and techniques are priceless and eye-opening, thank you Lissa! Moving Thread is a community treasure.

Second time taking a class with Lissa but certainly not the last

I had been struggling to sew anything wearable, so I finally signed up for the Boxy tee class. I had such an amazing experience and now I feel so much more confident in my sewing skills! Lissa is phenomenal instructor and made sure to answer any and all questions I’ve had. I not only learned how to make my first pattern, but also how to use a serger, how to make my own bias tape, and other sewing techniques. Highly recommend this class to anyone who is at the beginning of their sewing journey!

A great second step in my sewing journey!

I literally signed up for this workshop before my first workshop with Lissa ended (4-week intro to sewing)! This class was the perfect next step in my sewing progression -- reinforcing my basic machine sewing skills while simultaneously teaching me a ton about garment construction, patterns, design and fabric (in a very digestible format that wasn't too overwhelming). I love that this class allowed me to add my own style and creative skills into the mix -- and, because each student made personalized choices at various stages, it was a great opportunity to experiment and learn from others. I could take this class multiple times and learn new things each time. Lissa was fantastic as always -- so patient and helpful at every stage, and her classes always strike the right balance between being both challenging and relaxing at the same time. I learn so much, and I can't wait to take what I learned in class and apply it to my practice at home.

Amazing Class

This is my 3rd class with Lissa and each class gets more exciting as the projects become more involved. I really enjoyed the process of pattern making. In this class we create a box top pattern that can be altered a few ways, it's completely up to you. In the 1st class you learn how to create a paper pattern and with that pattern you make a practice top out of muslin. WOW! You go home with your paper pattern and muslin top with instructions to buy some material to create your dream top. In the 2nd class it's gets put together and Lissa is right with you every step of the way, with encouragement, instruction and guidance. You leave the class with a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction, and wanting more. Next class dress making.

Great Beginning Apparel Construction Class

Lissa Ziranek is THE best sewing teacher this side of the Mississippi! She is a clear communicator, is patient, and encouraging. Her Beginning Pattern Making Class is not to be missed. I am a repeat student and this class elevated my knowledge of sewing in the best way. We learned how to make a simple but attractive shirt! The Moving Thread Community is friendly and fun, an environment that Lissa and her associate teachers have cultivated well. Do yourself a favor and take a class here. You’ll support a great small, woman-owned business and also enhance your sewing skills. This charming little school is great for all levels!
